FIRST EDITION

Last year, I dyed a bolt of cotton/hemp fabric with 24 experimental recipes, and then set out to make a series of good combinations. The eight items here are the outcome. They have a lot of uses, and non uses. They also make excellent capes for your clique.

The fabric is a plain-woven 45% organic cotton and 55% hemp (inherently organic). The feel has been described by at least one friend as super fresh. A spill won’t hurt, because even if it doesn’t wash out, what remains will be an addition to the hand-dyed color. This material improves with use and washing, softening over time like linen does.

To purchase, message me with your selection and your address. Payments are accepted by Venmo or similar. I will ship in eco-friendly packaging within five days (price includes North America shipping). Or, if you would like to pick up from my studio in Pittsburgh, let me know, and take a $30 discount.

ITEM #1-2-3

Each section was dyed with madder root and red chilies. One section was also dipped in synth red. There is a yellow corner. Extra long. 55 x 118 inches. $270.

ITEM #15-17

One half was dyed using oak galls, tara, peach leaves, and tomato vines. The other half was dyed using quebracho, achiote, and synth black. An alchemical purple gray that I might never be able to re-create. 55 x 70 inches. $230. SOLD

ITEM #6-21

One half was dyed using onion skin, weld, citric acid, and synth black. The other half was dyed using oak galls, rust, synth black, and coffee. There is one yellow corner. Item below shows this one as well. 55 x 70 inches. $230.

ITEM #4-22

One half was dyed using oak galls, tara, madder, and iron. The other half was dyed using oak galls, rust, and synth black. In the picture with two, this is the left one. 55 x 77 inches. $230. SOLD

ITEM #11-12-24

The two purplish sections were dyed using lac, citric acid, red wine, and iron. The yellowish section was dyed using walnut hulls, madder, and synth yellow. One end points like an arrow. Extra long. 55 x 109 inches. $270.

ITEM #7-10

One half was dyed using onion skin, weld, and citric acid. The other half was dyed using oak galls, tara, peach leaves, tomato vines, and synth yellow. One corner was accidentally greased during photography so this was snipped off and re-hemmed (note second photo). 55 x 70 inches. $220.

ITEM #5-13

One half was dyed using oak galls, tara, madder, weld, and osage orange. The other half was dyed using lac, citric acid, red wine, iron, and synth black. The extra inset piece on one side was primarily dyed with lac. 55 x 69 inches. $230.

The great photos outdoors are by Elisa Cevallos. The snippet at the top with old script writing comes from a page about a club at Longwood College in 1899. I left out some ingredients above that are in almost every recipe: alum, salt, and water. The sketchbook page above shows notes from dyeing the sections. Colors may fade or change over time. I am planning another series for later this year.
